It with deep sadness that the Todd family announces the passing of William (Bill) Aiton Todd. He is survived by his partner Doris, brother Malcolm (Margaret), brother-in-law Scott (Linda) Cook, sisters-in-law Mona (Doug) Pike, Jo-Ann (John) MacDonald, children Martin (Boram), Colin (Cora Lee), and Kyla (Roy), his grandchildren Maggie (Kyle), Cassie, William, and Joel, niece Andrea (Chris) Hergott and many nieces and nephews on the Cook family side. He loved his cat Sonny and looked forward to daily visits from his granddog, Rufus, who would open the door on his own and come in for a quick hello and treats before heading home.
Dad was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1941. After finishing school, he worked at a bank but decided he needed more adventure. He joined the Hudson's Bay Company and moved to Canada, a place he'd never been and where he knew no one, around 1960. He worked in the north for many years and in Pond Inlet, NWT he met and married his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Cook. They shared many adventures in the north but moved to Newfoundland so he could earn his BEd at Memorial University. Shortly thereafter, they returned to the north as teachers for two years before moving south permanently.
Dad was of the opinion that they should find a place and a house they loved and then find jobs. They found the perfect spot in Brule but when they purchased it, the house had no electricity, one pipe with a hand pump, and an outhouse. Dad did most of the renovations on his own. He was forever an amateur inventor who believed in using your brains instead of brawn.
Bill taught for many years at Bible Hill Central Elementary School and then at North Colchester High School. Later, he founded a private academy where he taught computer skills, before retiring. Throughout his life, he volunteered wherever he thought he could make a difference. Deeply committed to his community, Bill dedicated countless hours to the Brule Sunday School and Brule Union Church, and was a key contributor to numerous local organizations, including the Bavarian Society, the Tatamagouche Community School, the Brule Community Centre, the Scottish Society in Truro, and the Brule Fossil Society.
A talented musician, Bill played the accordion with The Ranklers, The Spades, and Ceilidh, and lent his voice to the Tatamagouche Area Singers and the West Branch Area Singers. He also shared his musical gifts as the accordionist for Brule Union Church for nearly 40 years. Whenever there was a get-together, Dad put his accordion in the car and pulled it out to play and provide entertainment.
Dad loved to travel and shared many adventures travelling with his family and friends. His driving skills abroad were legendary. He was a talented sailor, and was often looking to recruit friends and family to sail on his sailboat Tantivy which provided enjoyment for many years. However, his true passion was being Papa to his grandchildren. He shared his love of music, his storytelling ability, and endless hugs and kisses with them, and they all found a special spot to cuddle on Papa's knee.
Bill spent his later years with his partner, Doris Cassidy, in their home in Brule. He loved being able to share all of his old stories again. They enjoyed morning coffees together in the sunroom, great discussions, and spent many evenings playing music together. Bill loved and was loved by Doris' family, in particular Anna Grattan who called him Papa Bill. Doris also accompanied him playing the hymns in church for the past few years. He loved spending time with her family and always felt welcomed.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Martin and Agnes, his beloved wife Peggy, brother-in-law Robin (Stephanie) Cook, and his son-in-law Harold Hogan. He will be missed by all who knew him.
