Vernon
Sprague
Feb 9, 1941 — Sep 18, 2025
Wentworth
Vernon Ross Sprague , 84, of Wentworth, passed away peacefully September 18, 2025. Born in River Hebert, Nova Scotia, on February 9, 1941, to the late Ira and Myrtle (Gower) Sprague, Vernon was the oldest of four siblings. Growing up Vernon attended East Wentworth School Section 102. He was a dedicated farmer his entire life, working up until his final day on earth, owning and operating his successful firewood business, later evolving to include snowplowing for several Wentworth households, and livestock farming. Vernon was a passionate community volunteer, acting as a founding member of the Wentworth Volunteer Fire Department in 1974 and fire chief for twenty years between 1983 and 2003. He served in various capacities for the fire department for a total of fifty-one years. He was an avid forty-fives player, hardly ever missing a game in Wentworth or Warwick Mountain. He enjoyed camping and attending various bluegrass festivals across the maritimes. Family meant everything to him (and so did chocolate cake with fudge icing, but not the kind you needed to use a hatchet to cut - ask Joyce about that!). Vernon enjoyed packing the grandkids in the camper and heading to the Valley to pick fruit. The grandkids remember countless trips across the PEI ferry with gram and gramp to visit relatives on the island, always doing the loop around to take the bridge home - because he never took the same route twice. Vernon will be forever missed by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor (Murray); children, Kevin (Wee Wana), and Joyce (Robbie); grandchildren, Stephanie, Jordan (Zachariah), and Melanie (Luke); great-granddaughter, Kinsley; sister, Grace; and step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his sister, Gladys; brother, Ira, in infancy; grandson, Justin; great-granddaughter, Josie-Lynn. In keeping with Vernon's wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid's Funeral Home & Crematorium. A drop-in celebration of life will take place from 2-4 pm Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Wentworth Learning Centre (13371 Highway 4). Words of Remembrance will take place at 3pm. The laying of the green by the Wentworth Volunteer Fire Department will take place at the Upper Wentworth Cemetery immediately following the celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wentworth Learning Centre for their infant centre daycare expansion.
