Robert Arthur
O'Connell
Apr 8, 1934 — Sep 21, 2025
Pugwash Point
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" O'Connell, of Pugwash Point Road, Nova Scotia, who died at home on September 21, 2025. Born in Halifax, Bob was a son of the late Arthur James and Margaret Mary O'Connell. Bob was a life-long learner and passionate educator, whose curious mind and generous spirit touched the lives of many. Whether teaching in the classroom or engaging in long conversations, ranging across topics from politics to history to the future of artificial intelligence, he inspired those around him to think deeply and live fully. An avid golfer and proud past member of Northumberland Links, Bob cherished time spent on the course with friends, appreciating both the game and the camaraderie it fostered. He also has many fond memories of his years at the Northumberland Community Curling Club, and a deep love for nature and the peaceful beauty of the Northumberland Strait.
Bob was a dedicated and loving grandfather to Anthony, Alex, and David Manuele, and Henley and Wilder Stevens, who brought him immense pride and joy. He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis O'Connell, his sisters Barbara Jean O'Connell and Cathleen O'Connell, and his brother Thomas William O'Connell. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth "Liz" Barrett, loving wife Donna O'Connell, his children Ruth and Michael, step-children Leanne (Rob) and Lyndsey (Pat), and his faithful dog, Blue. A special thank you is extended to his dear friends Gordon, Sharon, Carol & Casey, and Bala & Anil and Melissa, whose friendship, support, and shared laughter meant the world to him. Bob's warmth, wit, and wisdom will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Finally, we would like to thank Dr. Blaikie and all of the healthcare professionals who have cared for, and supported us, over the years. A private family gathering, to be announced at a later date, will be held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to the East Cumberland Lodge (https://www.thelodgeinpugwash.com/donations/), the Pugwash Fire Department (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/pugwash-volunteer-fire-dept/), or Chalice (https://chalice.ca/).
Bob's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—with every thoughtful conversation, round of golf, dram of scotch, and warm hug, that he shared with those he loved.
