Rita Olive
Cameron
Dec 12, 1925 — Dec 25, 2025
Ottawa
Rita Olive Cameron (nee Shea) was born on December 12, 1925, in Seacow Pond, Prince Edward Island. She passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, surrounded by immediate family in Ottawa, Ontario, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her.
She is predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Cameron of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, her second spouse, Sydney Young, of Calgary, Alberta, and only son, Ken Cameron, also of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lola Cameron, of Bedford, Nova Scotia, and her two grandsons, Jason Cameron (Rhonda) of Ottawa, Ontario, and Jamie Cameron (Kelley) of Bedford, Nova Scotia and great-grandchildren Alex Cameron (Tori) and Georgia Cameron (Ian) of Ottawa. She came from a large family of 9 siblings - survived by her sister, Ada, and predeceased by sisters, Irene, Iris, Viola and Frances, as well as brothers, Kenneth, Bertram and Vernet.
Rita lived a full and rewarding life, always acting and living as if she was much younger than her actual age. Her earlier years were spent in Alberta where she ran a boarding house in Banff and eventually worked for Paymaster Cheque Writers. She returned to rural Nova Scotia in mid-life with Lloyd for his final days but moved back west to Calgary in the 1980s where she became very active in volunteering in her retirement years with Sydney. Together, they routinely played music together across the northwest of the city, running seniors 'jam sessions' at various Legions, especially #238 Bowness. She dedicated a lot of volunteering hours to the Legion and the Army, Navy and Airforce Clubs in honour of her father who was a surviving wounded veteran of WWI. She was very proud of him and his service to our country and our values. One of her favourite activities was always selling poppies around Remembrance Day. The family will forever remember her for her frankness, tenacity, free spirit and love of music. Songs such as 'Honky Tonk Angels', 'Tennessee Waltz' and 'Back Home Again' will eternally be synonymous with her.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Peter D Clark Retirement Residence in Ottawa for their loving care for Rita over the last 7 years.
A Celebration of her Life will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 22 from Coulter's Funeral Home, Tatamagouche with a reception following the service. Committal will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery, Denmark.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Salvation Army of Canada which was one of her favourite charities.
