Obituary

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Pauline Messenger on September 14th, 2026.

Born in Stellarton to Hugh and Leona (MacNeil) Fleming, Pauline learned from an early age that service to others was her calling. She excelled in school, played bagpipes in the Balmoral Girls Pipe Band and volunteered with local service clubs.

In 1961, she met the boy with whom she would spend the rest of her life, her beloved Robert who, amoung a small number, would call her Polly. After high school, Pauline attended the Aberdeen School of Nursing graduating in 1967. That same year, she and Robert were married.

In 1970, Robert and Pauline moved to their true home in Pugwash, and it was here that her calling of service to others would flourish. Whether it be to her family or community, Pauline’s sense of duty to others was unwavering.

In the community Pauline was known as a kind and nurturing nurse, first at Sunset Adult Residential Centre and then at North Cumberland Memorial Hospital. A local physician described her as “a calm and gentle presence in the worst storms.” She also volunteered with the Gathering of the Clans and Hospital Auxiliary.

But it was to her family that Pauline’s dedication and service was truly focused. She approached her role of wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend with absolute dedication and unwavering love.

Pauline is missed by her beloved Robert, children Ann and Keith (Sandra), grandchildren Glen, Sarah and Claire, sister Cindy and many, many others.

As per Pauline’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Remember her through acts of kindness and giving to others.
