Obituary

Mathieu, Omer Aime Joseph - 83, Wentworth, NS. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our superhero and fearless leader, Omer Mathieu, at the young age of 83. Omer proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy, where he dedicated 26 and a half years of service and retired as a Petty Officer First Class. Throughout his naval career, he was active in many sports, including squash, softball, hockey, swimming, and boxing—where he earned a memorable nickname of Hammer. Following his retirement, Omer embraced his passion for teaching and became a Level 2 Ski Instructor at Wentworth Valley Ski Hill, where he inspired countless people to learn and love the sport while making many lasting friendships. Music was another of his great loves—he was rarely seen without his guitar and often played at local community jams, festivals, and gatherings. Together with his beloved wife Sylvia, Omer spent time traveling with their motorhome, before becoming snowbirds in Quartzsite, Arizona, where they built cherished friendships. Later, they purchased a vacation home in Hillcrest Park, Zephyrhills, Florida, where their circle of friends continued to grow. Above all, Omer was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He taught his family the values of deep love, perseverance, integrity, and hard work. To them, he was not only a guide but also a steady source of strength, laughter, and unconditional love. Omer is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sylvia; his children, Scott (Charlene), Rhonda (Calvin), Violi (Laurie), and Paul (Laura); eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Leo and Yvonne, his brother Marcel, his sister Joanne, and his son Michael. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid's Funeral Home & Crematorium. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
