Margaret
Reid
Mar 22, 1932 — Feb 5, 2023
Williamsdale
Margaret Verne Reid (nee Dobson), age 90, of Williamsdale, N.S. passed away February 5th, 2023 at East Cumberland Lodge in Pugwash, N.S. surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Little River, N.S. on March 22nd, 1932 to the late Robert and Margaret Dobson (nee Ettinger). Margaret was the loving wife of Wendell Reid and mother to Jim (Norma), Wayne (Karma), Derek (Brenda), Brent (Charlene) and Wendy Reid. Grandmother to Wade (Octavia), Devon (Sherry), Natalie, Blaine, Matthew, Jordan, Jennifer (Steve), Ryan (Katelyn), and Jordon. Great Grandmother to Ian, William, Lucas, Karis, Everley, Brodie and Kylie. Margaret was pre-deceased by her husband, Wendell , infant daughter Margaret Heather, brothers William, Harry, Roland and James, and sisters, Sarah, Cristina, Stella and Eileen.
Born as the youngest of 9 children, Margaret grew up in Little River and at a very young age began helping with the chores of planting and harvesting crops and tending to livestock. She and her brother Jimmie enjoyed singing in school concerts, at the Little River Baptist Church and at their home when friends and family came to visit. Margaret used to share many fond memories of a hard – but good – life growing up in Little River.
Margaret used to visit her sister Sadie in Williamsdale and during one visit in early May of 1950 she met Wendell Reid, a neighbour of Sadie. Margaret and Wendell were married on June 11, 1952 and during the early years of their marriage, they moved around Cumberland County wherever the lumber industry took them. Margaret was hired to cook for the men that were staying at the lumber camps where Wendell did various jobs related to lumber. When it came time to start a family, they settled in Williamsdale where they were very active in the community for many years. Margaret and Wendell owned a small farm in Williamsdale, producing strawberries, dairy, beef, poultry, and pork. Margaret also worked at Oxford Frozen Foods Ltd for many years as a lab technician in Quality Control. In later years when Margaret required surgery for knee replacement she so much appreciated the excellent care that she had received at the Moncton Hospital, that she became actively involved in an annual walk-a-thon fundraiser. In the 15 years that she was able to do this, she raised over $68,000 for the Moncton Orthopedic Foundation. An excellent cook, Margaret became well known for her delicious desserts offered for community dinners or sold at various community fundraising events. Margaret and Wendell were very active members in their community for many years: the Millvale United Baptist Church, the Oxford Frozen Foods Pioneer Club, and the Oxford Seniors Club, to name a few. In January of 2022 they moved into East Cumberland Lodge, in Pugwash. The family would like to extend a very heart-felt thanks to the staff of East Cumberland Lodge for the outstanding care that they provided to Margaret.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Millvale United Baptist Church are welcome. Visitation on Tuesday, February 7th, 2023, 5:00-8:00 PM at MacDiarmid's Funeral Home & Cremation, 5075 Main Street, Oxford, N.S.
