Obituary

Allan, John (Jack) Gilbert (18 June 1930 – 13 th March 2023). The sweetest brother, Uncle and friend, Jack Allan passed away at the QEII. Born and raised in beautiful Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Jack dreamed of taking over the family farm but under his father's encouragement, took an entry level position at the Bank of Nova Scotia at the age of 17 and went up the ranks until his retirement after fourty-plus years. Jack was always a great mix of a man who loved his solitude and his own space, and also enjoyed a good laugh and company. Jack had a strong love for his parents – Frank and Margaret (MacIvor) Allan, his three brothers and six sisters. Jack was famous for his many flower gardens and the huge hillside vegetable garden he and his brothers, Bruce and Silver, planted each year in Pugwash, which was always littered with his much-loved sunflowers. "Uncle Jack" was adored by his many nieces and nephews, for whom he always had time, humour, generosity and kindness. Jack had little interest in possessions and focused his interests on flowers, church going, half-finishing crossword puzzles, napping, visiting the beach, fishing, and watching Spring Training in Florida in the winters. In the winter months, Jack would have photographs of flowers everywhere, and in the summer months, he would have a multitude of fresh cut flowers in vases throughout the old farmhouse in Pugwash. Shaking his head and smiling at his sisters' antics, being outside tending to the garden with his brothers, and taking his many nieces and nephews to the beach on the Gulf Shore were Jack's joys. A devout Christian, an awful cook and housekeeper, and a dear heart, Jack was an incredibly generous and modest individual who never wanted recognition for his many kind acts, and a dear brother who will be greatly missed. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews who will never forget his good humour and his patient attitude every summer towards the hoard of sisters and their children who would descend upon the old farmhouse and temporarily take away his lovely quiet world. Through Jack's kindness, so many of the Allan family continue to have the joy and happiness of Pugwash summers. Upon his retirement, Jack always dreamed of becoming a life-long gardener in the old Pugwash farmstead, and as a life-long bachelor, Jack often reflected that he needed to put an ad in the newspaper "Woman and tractor wanted – please send photo of tractor." But his health did not allow for this dream to come to reality. Jack will be deeply missed by his remaining sisters, Ann (Maurice) Doucet and Mary (Vincent) Lacelle, his many nieces and nephews and his friends at the Berkley. In the three months prior to his death, Jack lost his sisters Beryl (Tom) Arab and Hester Allan – the three of them were so close in life and to Jack's deep, spiritual beliefs, are now together in the hereafter with his mother, father, brothers Max (Jessie), Bruce (Margaret) and Silver (Edith), and his sisters Doreen (Doug) and Mildred (Milard). The Allan family would like to thank the Berkley for its kindness and care to Jack over the years, and to the QEII doctors and nurses who provided end of life care in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust (https://nsnt.ca/giving/) or to the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia (Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia). A private service and burial will be held at a later date.
