Janet Elaine Tattrie , 79, passed away peacefully at North Cumberland Health Care Centre, surrounded by her loving family. Born October 10th 1946, to the late Fred and Helen (Brownell) Thomas in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Janet grew up in Thompson and later lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a time before moving around and then back to Oxford to settle. Despite her small-town roots, she wanted to learn how to drive in a real city. Janet married the love of her life, Freeman Tattrie on October 22nd 1966. They spent 61 years together, and made plenty of memories- from snowmobiling with friends to dancing on tables, she knew how to have fun. Janet was part of a sorority and even served as president for a period of time. Janet didn't stop having fun, even after becoming a mother. Greg and Janelle were the lights of her life, and she was truly the best mother that anyone could ask for.
Janet was always giving back. During COVID-19, she put together goodie bags for elderly community members who did not have a lot of family. She loved playing Santa and dropping off these surprise bags to brighten people's day. For many years, she ran an auction site on Facebook that grew quite popular, where she thrifted and collected items to sell and raise money for those in need, like a community member who lost her husband, people who needed to travel for cancer treatments, and the local food bank, skating club, and more. This took a great deal of time, money, and effort on her part, but she loved doing it. Janet gave back in small ways, too, like randomly ordering pizza for families in need just to cheer them up. This was the kind of person she was. Janet was involved in many organizations throughout her years: The Oxford Food Bank, the Happy Neighbours Club, The Lionettes, and a local immigrant resettlement committee. You could always find her lending a hand, helping folks with a smile, and she never passed judgment on anyone. Janet won a Provincial Volunteer Award in 2018, which recognized her strong sense of community and volunteerism.
When not volunteering, Janet enjoyed spending time with her husband, Freeman and their gaggle of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Janet was exceptionally close with her grandchildren and played a pivotal role in helping raise them. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Janet is survived by her husband Freeman, her son Gregory, daughter Janelle (Sean), granddaughters Hailie (Jacob), Megan (Brett), and grandsons Jake, Jason (Sam), and her great-grandchildren Keidan, Naveah, Ava, and soon-to-be-born Haisley, her brothers Ron (Ethel), and Gerald, her sister-in-law Marion, her brother-in-law Aubrey. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbours. She was predeceased by her sister Evelyn and her brother Earl.
A Celebration of Life visitation will be held from 1-4 pm Saturday, January 10th in MacDiarmid's Funeral Home & Crematorium. Donations may be made to Thomson Cemetery.
