James "Terry"
Mackinnon
May 2, 1945 — Mar 11, 2026
Balfron
It with great sadness and much love that we announce the passing of Terry on March 11, 2026 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS.
Terry was born in Pictou, NS, on May 2, 1945. He was the older son of James and Vesta (Watt) MacKinnon. Terry grew up in Brule Shore, NS, and later attended North Colchester High School.
Terry started his career at Maritime Tel & Tel in Halifax in 1965 and retired in 1997.
He was then employed with the Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education as a school bus driver for 17 years, retiring again in 2014. He often said that this was the best job he ever!
Terry was a retired volunteer firefighter with the Tatamagouche Fire Department, a former member of the Board of Willow Lodge as well as being a Minor Hockey Coach with the Tatamagouche Titans. Terry enjoyed doing anything outdoors, including walking, gardening and looking after his property, working with his tractor and building projects in his garage.
Terry is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Linda (Vincent) MacKinnon; his sons Paul, Todd (Kelly), Mark (Shannon). He is also survived by his pride and joy, his eight grandchildren Ewan, Lucy, Henry, Jake, Hudson, John, Charlie and Leo. They adored their Papa and his influence on them is immeasurable.
Terry is also survived by his brother Allan (Joanne) MacKinnon, Denmark, NS, and his sisters Nancy (Bev) Brown, Ottawa, ON and Carolyn (Hank) Scarth, Rothesay, NB. Also, he is survived by his sisters-in-law, Judy (Vince) Ingham and Kathy (George) White as well as his nieces Jennifer, Lisa, Sarah and Jane and his nephews Chris, Kevin, lan, Gordie, Michael, Jim and Jonathan. Terry's family meant the world to him.
Terry was predeceased by his parents James and Vesta (Watt) MacKinnon and his parents - in-law Orrin and Annie (Fraser) Vincent.
Terry will be remembered for his unique sense of humour. As his sister Nancy said, "when you talked with Terry, you always came away with a smile!" Friends of our sons all agree that he was "One of a kind!"
Our family would like to thank Dr. Dan MacDonald for his wonderful care. We would also like to thank the staff of the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Emergency Department, EHS, the nurses and doctors at the Halifax Infirmary Neurology Floor and staff of the Radiation Department at the Dickson Centre.
A celebration of Terry's life and interment will be held in the summer.
If desired, donations in Terry's memory may be made to the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter's Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
