Obituary

Elizabeth Ann Hogan (Stargratt): Aug 5, 1936- Sept 25, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Ann Hogan, 84, at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, Nova Scotia.  Ann was predeceased by her husband Jim Hogan; son, Harold Hogan; and daughter-in-law, Diane Hogan-Bigras.  She leaves to mourn, her daughter, Vicky (Ken); and sons, Bill, Gerald (Peggy) and Bruce (Wendy), and her daughter-in-law, Kyla. Also mourning her loss are her grandchildren, Bobby, Patricia, Jenn, Rebecca, Maggie, Cassie, Seamus & Madeline, as well as her 5 Great Grandchildren.  Ann was born in Temiscaming, Quebec to Laura and Bill Stargratt. She was a loving wife, mother and career professional. After graduating High School, she studied Medical Laboratory Technology in Sudbury, ON, which began her long career as a Lab Technologist. After meeting her husband, Jim, a military man, she travelled to many parts of the country working in her field at the North Bay Civic Hospital, North Bay, ON, the Pembroke General, Pembroke, ON, the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, AB and the Health Sciences Center, St. John's, NL before retiring in 1990. During her career, she still found time to raise 5 children.  Ann enjoyed travelling around the world whenever possible. She was a great cook and anyone who knew her in recent years will remember her fondly for her much coveted egg rolls and sui mei. In her spare time, she loved to bake and entertain family and friends. She also liked to knit, sew, quilt and any other craft that she put her mind to. Her homemade Christmas gift bags have become cherished and guarded possessions amongst family members and friends alike.  Ann believed that the way to avoid growing old was to keep your mind young.   Her favorite quote was inspired by Peter Pan:  "if you believe in Fairies, you will never grow old." This was important to her as after her husband Jim passed away in 1987 and the last of her children moved away to begin their life's journey, her Grandchildren became her priority and she routinely arranged to take them on " adventures" as she affectionately called them.  In accordance with Ann's wishes, there will be no funeral service or flowers. Cremation has taken place and a gathering of family and friends at a later date.  Anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory can direct it to Diabetes Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.  Online condolences can be sent to the family by following the links on this web page.
