Henderson, Edward John Philip - 82, Little River, passed away with his family by his side on Thursday, November 20, 2025 in Gables Lodge, Amherst. Born in Hamilton, Ontario he was a son of the late Nicholas and Josephine (Weiler) Henderson.
Growing up in Hamilton, Ed lived in a lively household with his four siblings and enjoyed the energy of city life. He was proudly known in the family as "the mischief," a label he wore with a grin. He loved playing basketball and performing in theatre. Ed attended Cathedral High School in Hamilton, Ontario and then University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario.
After graduating from university, he set out to explore more of Canada and moved to Nova Scotia to work as a teacher. It was there that he met Emma, and a beautiful new chapter began. He embraced his new surroundings and fell in love with everything they offered, especially the large, welcoming family he gained. He loved his children and grandchildren and great-grandchild and jumped at any chance to spend time with them.
Ed discovered a passion for nature, especially gardening. Over the years, he tended multiple vegetable gardens, cared for his fruit orchard, managed more raspberries than any sane person would attempt, and spent his days surrounded by a variety of family animals on the farm. He fully embraced his new lifestyle, finding joy in all that nature provided.
Teaching was his lifelong vocation, both in and out of the classroom. Many friends and family members, especially his nieces and nephews, worked alongside him, learning from him and with him through shared experiences on the farm.
He also loved joining his brothers-in-law in all their adventures. Whether it was haying, cutting and hauling wood for winter, hunting, or tackling whatever marvel of construction or engineering was underway, he was always eager to join in. And he loved every moment of it.
He shared a beautiful 54 year marriage with his wife, Emma. They shared the same deep love for nature and family, and they were always working on something together, whether it was visiting family, building a new vegetable garden, creating a flower bed, refinishing furniture, puzzling, playing cards until 1 am, or baking Emma's famous rolls. Whatever it was, they were in it together.
Ed is survived by his wife, the former Emma Black; children, Tara (Dale Simpson), Beaverbrook; Janine Burnett, Oxford; Marc (Suzanne), Andover, MA; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Cora and Lucy; great-granddaughter, Sophia Connell; brother, Joseph (Sharon Thomas), Hamilton, ON; sisters, Anne (Norman) Oucharek, Mississauga, ON; Mary (Gary Putman), Hamilton, ON; Margaret Henderson, Hamilton, ON; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by son-in-law, Kevin Burnett.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 24 from 1-3 pm, followed immediately by a funeral service at 3 pm, both at MacDiarmid's Funeral Home, Oxford. Burial to follow in Birch Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Birch Grove Cemetery.
