Obituary

Beaton, Douglas Thomson "Chookie" - 87, of Springhill, passed away January 2nd, 2024 at Gables Lodge with his devoted daughter and granddaughter by his side. He was the only son of the late Samuel and Jean (Thompson) Beaton. In his early years with his mother Jean and wife Ruth, they owned and operated the former nursing home, Sunrise Villa in Pugwash for 21 years. Doug also ran a boarding house in Springhill for over 30 years. Prior to that he also owned and operated a general store in Springhill. Doug loved to travel with his family in his younger years; in particular, train travel throughout Canada and the United States. He also loved his gardens while his family enjoyed his homemade meatloaf and potato salad. He was married to the love of his life, Ruth, of 49 years until her unexpected passing in 2019. Samuellen "Sam" and Melody (Chris Adshade) were blessed to call him their father. While Savannah will forever know him as Papa. He most recently became a great-grandfather to Delilah-Dawn, whom all he adored and loved beyond measure. He was predeceased by his mother, Jean Beaton; father, Samuel Beaton; and his loving wife, Ruth Beaton. The family would like to express deep gratitude to the CCA's at Gables Lodge who went above and beyond their call of duty and his dear friend, Donna Martin of Springhill, who was by his side along with his family until the last few moments of his time on this earth. He also held a special place in his heart for his crib partner, Helen Thompson and dance partner, Dorthy Harroun, both of Springhill. He was the proud owner of a little pug named Andy who will miss him dearly. Arrangements are in the care of MacDiarmid's Funeral Home & Crematorium.
