Obituary

Ryan, Dorothy Mae - 98 of Pugwash, passed away peacefully, May 31st, 2023 in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born in Malagash, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Annie (Stevens) Treen.  Dorothy lived most of her life in Conns Mills, before moving to Pugwash. Dorothy was a school teacher in Victoria, NS, before marrying and raising her family of five. Later, with three boys still at home, she took classes to work as a Personal Care Worker at the Sunset Residential Centre, receiving Awards for theory of Psychiatry and Nursing theory. She was a member of Pugwash River United Church for many years, often organizing special services and serving as treasurer. She was a member of UCW (United Church Women) and WI (Women's Institute). Dorothy served on the board of directors as treasurer for Conns Mills Cemetery. Dorothy had many talents, quilting, knitting, gardening and making jams, preserves, which she shared with family and friends. Her goal was for every child, grandchild to get a handmade quilt. She loved a good game of cribbage, and always had a jigsaw puzzle on the go. In 1973, she took her three boys on a train trip across Canada to BC. They experienced a train derailment on the way, but it didn't dampen her interest in travel. In 2012, she flew to BC for her sister Anna's birthday, and  in 2015 at age 90, she flew across Canada again, spending time in Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver Island visiting family.  During Harbourfest she took a helicopter ride over the Pugwash shoreline, commenting that the ride was too short. Then at age 93 she traveled to Ontario to meet her twin great-granddaughters. In 1985, the book titled "Over Ninety Years of Reminiscences, Arthur Treen", was compiled by Dorothy and put into print.  She was able to remain in her home, with the wonderful care of the VON nurses and Home care workers, until she fell and broke her hip in April. The family is very appreciative of VON, Homecare and the caring staff at Pugwash and  Amherst hospitals. She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Brownell, Moncton, NB; sons, Kevin (Diane Chandler), Campbell River, BC; Larry (Lola), Nepean, ON; Perry, Conns Mills, NS.
