It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Derrick Baird Whitford of Malagash, age 63 after a long battle with cancer. He leaves behind his fiancé, Bonnie Church, daughter, Emily (Alex Casey), and two grandsons, Dwyer and Hudson; his father, James "Jimmy" Whitford, as well as special people in his life, Nicole Church, (Ben Tucker) and Cindy Church; siblings, Jamie (Janet), Allan (Donna) and Janice (Steven) Matheson. He is predeceased by his wife, Sara, mother, Violet and grandparents.

Derrick started his career in carpentry with Dale's Construction where he worked for several years. He then started his own company, Whitford Construction. He was well known for his hard work, skill and dedication to his clients through the building of many beautiful homes in the Malagash and surrounding areas. It is through this avenue that Derrick also made many lifelong friends.

Special thanks to Annie Bennett, Martha Ferguson, Dr. Shortt, Dr. Anna Roebuck and Dr. Daniel Rason as well as the nurses and staff at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital who provided phenomenal care to Derrick during his stay. They went above and beyond in every way including a beautiful wedding for his daughter, Emily at the hospital. We are so appreciative. We would also like to thank the many friends who took the time to visit and call Derrick. It meant so much to him.

There will be no visitation or funeral service as per his request. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Coulter's Funeral Home in Tatamagouche.
