Obituary

It is with a great heaviness and sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Arthur Purdy on Friday, August 15, 2025 at the age of 85.

Born on October 31, 1939, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Dan was the youngest in his family. His Halloween birthday always seemed fitting, as he loved to bring joy and laughter to those around him with his humor and playful tricks.

He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Margaret (Langille) Purdy; his beloved wife, Charlotte (Whalen) Purdy; his sister and brother-in-law, Willa and Fred Poole; brother-in-law, William Harris; and sister-in-law, Camellia Gorrell.

Dan is survived by his cherished sons, Nicholas and Michael Purdy of Tatamagouche; his sister, Ruth Harris of Halifax; his brother, Henry (Gertrude) Purdy of Charlottetown; sisters-in-law Heather Morse (Bruce), Lindsay Diplock, and Michael and Shaun Whalen. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Dan will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye, his quiet strength, and his boundless talents. A whiz in mathematics, art, and nearly everything he set his mind to, he carried himself with calm humility, even while living with chronic illness that few truly knew of. His humor, warmth, and unwavering love for his wife and sons never faltered. As Nick and Michael fondly say, "we never felt safer than when he held us in his arms or guided us by his words—he was, to us, the standard".

In later years, Dan found comfort in the simple pleasures of sitting in his favorite chair, rocking by the kitchen window. But his greatest gift was storytelling. Whether recounting the antics of the "Dagger Gang," adventures hunting with Sandy, family tales, or wild encounters from his youth, Dan's stories—half unbelievable and always hilarious—brought joy to his sons, their friends, and all who listened. "Story time" was legendary. Most thought he was spinning yarns but as the boys say, "after you have seen him punch a cow between the eyes, and drop it to its knees, you start to believe".

Over the years, Dan wore many hats: teacher, welder, shipbuilder, transport driver—and always, the entertainer who could make anyone laugh. Despite his accomplishments, he remained humble. When once asked by Nick how many miles he had driven across North America, Dan only smiled and replied, "A few," though in truth, he had traveled ocean to ocean, and border to border.

Those who knew Dan, as clichéd as it is to say, loved him. The final words will be those of his boys – "He presented to the world the guise of a " Clark Kent " but really was a Superman. He is finally able to rest, and I hope he knew how much we loved him. We love you Dad."

Dan's family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Monday, September 1 in Coulter's Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. A Graveside Service will follow in Bell Gift Cemetery, West New Annan.
