MacDonnell, R. Byron – 77, Oxford, passed away peacefully at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, on April 14, 2025. Born on March 5, 1948, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Byron and Muriel (Chambers) MacDonnell. Byron is survived by his son, Sean (Amanda) and grandson, Sam, of Colorado; son Mark (Julie), of Leamington; sister Margot (Randy) Hollis of Dartmouth; his niece Eryn (Scott) McDonell of Ottawa; his niece Kathryn Hollis (Halifax); Sister in Laws, Catherine Baker (Halifax); Anne Marie Horne-Robinson (Toronto); Janet (Doug) Cameron, Antigonish; Brothers in Laws, Don Horne, Chester; Mike Horne (PEI); and many other nieces and nephews. Byron was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lucille Marie MacDonnell (Horne) and niece Kirsten Hollis.
After graduating from St. Peter's High School, Dartmouth, Byron went on to graduate from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1973. After moving to Cumberland County with his wife Lucille, Byron was hired by the Cumberland Municipal School Board to design and implement a new physical education program for the seven elementary schools served by the Pugwash sub-system (Pugwash, South Pugwash, Wentworth, Malagash, Wallace, Northport, Collingwood and Westchester) from 1973 to 1981. During this time as the circuit physical education teacher, Byron was involved in the design of the two new gymnasiums at the Cyrus Eaton and Wallace Elementary Schools and many of these students were one of the first in the province to be involved in the now popular elementary Ski Program at Ski Wentworth. After eight years of elementary school circuit physical education, Byron moved into Pugwash District High School (1981-1986) teaching physical education, mathematics and social studies and during his five years here, he coached or assisted in coaching the basketball, soccer, hockey and downhill ski teams. From 1986 to 2004, Byron transferred to Oxford Regional High School switching to a classroom assignment teaching a variety of subjects but mostly concentrated in the area of social studies. While at ORHS, Byron continued to coach the school soccer and downhill ski teams for several years while still finding time to coach and referee in the Oxford Minor Hockey Association.
Byron was very community minded and was very active over the years and was a Life Member of the Oxford and Area Lions Club, one of the founding members of the Oxford Area Minor Hockey Association and later the new Oxford Minor Hockey Association and served on the Town of Oxford committee liaison with the RCMP. Family was always a priority for Byron, he was a devoted husband and father as he was always there and involved with his two sons, Sean and Mark, and his grandson Sam.
Cremation has taken place under the care of MacDiarmid's Funeral Home and Crematorium, Oxford. A celebration of Byron's life will take place at 2 pm Saturday, June 7 in Trinity United Church, Oxford. Burial to follow in Leamington Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Leamington Cemetery, the Oxford Community Centre or charity of choice.
Byron's Family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre for their exceptional care and kindness during Byron's stay there the last few months.
