It is with profound sadness that the family of Brian Edwin Gordon, age 71, of Pugwash, Nova Scotia, announces his sudden passing. Brian will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Helen (Dewar) Gordon, his children, Mary (Peter) Smith and Andrew (Lindsay) Gordon, and his grandchildren, Cameron, Nathan, and Greyzen, who were a tremendous source of pride and joy in his life. He was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Isabel Gordon.
Brian was a proud Pugwasher, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a tireless supporter of his community. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome and connected and seemed to know just about everyone.
Brian’s lifelong love of golf began at the age of 12 in 1967. Over the years, golf became much more than a game to him. He became a champion of Northumberland Links Golf Club, serving as Club Champion an astonishing 15 times, and later as President of Northumberland Links and President of the Nova Scotia Golf Association. He played courses across Canada and beyond, including Pebble Beach and St. Andrews, but no matter how impressive the course, Northumberland Links was always his favourite. It was, after all, home.
Golf brought Brian countless friendships and stories. Travelling with him often meant unexpected reunions with old friends, acquaintances and people he somehow always seemed to know. His love of sport extended well beyond golf. He enjoyed playing and watching hockey, baseball, curling, broomball and basketball to name a few. He was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan and celebrated every win. He also enjoyed coaching and supporting local sports, including coaching Andrew’s minor hockey team.
After attending Dalhousie University for two years, Brian returned home and began a career at the Windsor Salt Mine, where he worked for more than 30 years. He was also deeply involved in the labour community, serving as Treasurer of his union.
Brian’s commitment to Pugwash and the surrounding community was equally enduring. He served for many years as Chair of the North Cumberland Community Health Foundation and was proud to play a role in the creation of the new North Cumberland Health Care Centre. If something was happening that helped strengthen the village he loved, there was a very good chance Brian was involved.
Brian’s greatest pride, however, was his family. He was immensely proud of Mary and Andrew and took great pleasure in watching them build their own lives. His grandchildren, Cameron, Nathan and Greyzen, brought him enormous happiness, and he delighted in watching them grow.
Brian leaves behind a large circle of family, friends, teammates, golfing partners, colleagues and community members who will feel his absence in countless ways. He leaves behind much more than a list of accomplishments. He leaves behind friendships, stories, traditions, and a community that is better because he was part of it.
Though his passing was far too sudden, those who knew Brian will continue to encounter him everywhere — on the golf course, around the rink, at a community event, in the stands watching a game, and in the stories shared about the man who somehow seemed to know everybody.
Pugwash was Brian’s home, and he was, in many ways, one of its constants. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A service celebrating Brian’s life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church, Wallace, Nova Scotia. A reception will immediately follow at Northumberland Links Golf Course, Pugwash. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local charity of your choice.
