Elizabeth Margaret "Betty" Weatherbee (née Stewart), 92
Elizabeth Margaret "Betty" Weatherbee, age 92, of Collingwood Corner, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, at High Crest in Springhill, NS. Born and raised in Upper Musquodoboit, Betty was the second daughter of the late Bryden and Elizabeth "Bessie" Stewart. It was there that she met the love of her life, Lloyd Weatherbee, when he came to work in the woods and boarded with her family. They married in 1955 and began their life together in Leamington, in what Betty fondly called their "little house" — a three-room home filled with love, laughter, and eventually two children.
After a brief time in Springhill, Betty and Lloyd settled in Collingwood in 1961, where they built a life and remained in the same home ever since.
Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her beloved great-grandson, Carter, two brothers, Evans (Nita) and Frederick (Barbara), three sisters, Marie (Leonard), Avis and Eleanor, by her parents in-law, Harry, Marion Weatherbee, and sister-in-law, Jean (Ted).
Betty is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Lloyd Weatherbee, who cared for her with unwavering love and patience in the final years of her life, even as Alzheimer's disease progressed and additional care became necessary. She is also lovingly remembered by her three children: Brian (Heather) of Cornwall, PEI; Cheryl of Collingwood; and Jamie (Stacey) of Fredericton, NB, as well as two honourary daughters, Wanda Coon and Shelley Wood.
She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren — Brianne (Mitch), Brad, Hilary (Robbie), Mitch, Matt, Brayden, Sam and Sophie — and her great-grandchildren — Jackson, Spencer, Nova, Caleb, Ryker, and Aurora — who will grow up hearing cherished stories of their great-Grammie, or Gramma. Betty is also survived by her sister, Cora Pearson of Martensville, SK, and her brother- in-law, Stewart (Judilyn) of Ontario.
Betty was, in every sense, a "goer." From the very beginning, she was deeply involved in her church and community. Whether it was pancake suppers, turkey dinners, quilting gatherings, or "feeding the Lions," if it supported the church or community hall, Betty was at the heart of it.
A dedicated and hardworking woman, Betty contributed to her family in many ways. As her children grew, she worked part-time in the community — at the local store and post office — always helping to make ends meet. Above all, she was an exceptional
homemaker. What she couldn't buy, she made.
An accomplished quilter, Betty lovingly made quilts for her children upon their marriages, as well as many others for friends and extended family. She was rarely without her knitting needles, often finishing one or two pairs of mittens in an evening, many of which she donated each year to the church mitten tree.
Betty was also known for her baking — her pies, breads (especially white and raisin), and cookies were favourites among family and neighbourhood children alike, who always knew where to find a warm treat.
Family was at the centre of Betty's life. She embraced every member of her growing family with open arms and a generous heart. Caring for her grandchildren came naturally to her, and she treasured every visit, even as they grew older.
The family would like to sincerely thank the V.O.N. Cumberland and to the staff of High-Crest Nursing Home, Springhill for the wonderful care given to Betty.
A service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Sunday, April 12, at MacDiarmid's Funeral Home & Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford, NS. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m., followed by memorial service at 3 pm. Burial will take place at a later date. No flowers by request because you know they made her sneeze.
Betty's life was one of quiet generosity, steady devotion, and deep love. She will be remembered always and missed dearly.
