Obituary

Barbara Fraser (Weir) Mason was born August 30, 1940, in Edmonton Alberta, to Barbara Elisabeth Merle Clipperton, of Lac Du Bonnet Manitoba, and Charles Victor Fraser Weir, of Pine Tree, Nova Scotia. Barbara's father was sent to England during WWII, shortly before she was born. He did not get to meet her until he came back from overseas. Barbara's mother was a Registered Nurse, her father was a Civil Engineer. After the Weir family reunited, they moved to Ottawa where Barbara grew up.

Barbara completed her 13th grade with honours in 1959 at Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, Ontario. She earned an Associate Diploma (ARCT) in Piano Pedagogy through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Certificate Program in Canada.

Barbara and James Glendale Mason, met through her best friend Maria in Ottawa. In the fall of 1959, Barbara went to Moose River Crossing in northern Ontario, near James Bay to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. While Barbara was teaching, James and Barbara made plans to marry in December. James traveled north by train. On December 18th, 1959, they went by dog sled to the Moose Factory Anglican Church, where Canon Iserhoff, a Cree minister performed the wedding. Mother wore a beautiful wedding dress. Her sister Betty was her maid of honour. During the wedding ceremony, James was placing the ring on Barbara's finger when the lights went out and the ring was dropped. While the sled dogs barked, Johnny McClennon, the best man got a flashlight, Jamie got down on his knees, the ring was found, and Barbara became Mrs. James Mason. They stayed at the schoolhouse for a couple of weeks before returning to Ottawa.  While it was still winter, Barbara and James traveled to Nova Scotia in a 1954 Mercury Monarch. On their way to Tangier, Nova Scotia, on the Mooseland Road, they found it unplowed; they could go no further and slept in their car. The next day they found a different route and made their way to the Mason Family home.

Soon they found their own home and farm in Sunnybrae, Pictou County, where Sally was born. Eighteen months later, they went to Ottawa where Nan was born. Two years later, Jamie was born while Barbara was attending Teachers College in Truro. Another move took them to Wolfville where Barbara attended Acadia University. Elsie was born in January of 1967; Barbara graduated that spring with a bachelor's degree in teaching and psychology.

In 1969, Barbara and James moved to Wallace Highlands, Nova Scotia. Here they attended the Pugwash SDA Church, which met in the home of Cedric Wallace. Charlie joined the family in 1974. Barbara stayed busy looking after her five children. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, rug hooking, painting, and music. She taught piano lessons, played Cello at an orchestra in New Glasgow, she played piano at the Pugwash SDA Church and organ for the Pugwash United Church (Wesley St. Matthews).

The garden flourished, the freezer was full for the winter. A cow was milked, butter and cheese were made, eggs were gathered, sheep were shorn, and bread was made. Kids grew up, went to school, got married, and left home. James and Barbara built a new home while Charlie was still home, where they enjoyed a roomy house with sunny windows.

Travel days came where Barbara and James went to visit Grandchildren, they traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, to the Panama Cannel, to Israel, England and Scotland. In 2024, they took a cruise to Alaska with family.

Barbara loved attending church and enjoyed listening to bible studies. She went with Jamie to work on tree jobs. At home they liked to watch TV together, Barbara enjoyed knitting slippers and washcloths. Children took turns visiting them in their Wallace Highlands home. In November 2025 Barbara had a small stroke of which she mostly overcame. Sally and Andreas were visiting home in June of 2026. On Friday, June 12, 2026 Barbara started the day going to the hairdressers, went out to eat for lunch, Barbara was working on some projects at home then sat down to rest. While resting she fell asleep, to be awakened by our Lord when he comes to take us to our Heavenly Home.

Barbara will be dearly missed by her husband James, her older sister, Margorie Elizabeth Weir Butler, her Children; Sally Becker (Andreas), Nan Duerksen (Russell), James Mason (Patti), Elsie Mason (Jerome), and Charles Mason (Amanda).  Eighteen Grandchildren and Eleven great-grandchildren.
