It is with sadness that the family of Alvin Ruiter Hillhouse announces his passing on August 1st, 2026 at the age of 80. Alvin passed away peacefully in his home in Pugwash River, Nova Scotia, surrounded by his wife and children. Alvin was born in Cowansville, Quebec, on September 7, 1945 to Dora Ruiter Hillhouse and William Pervical Hillhouse. William Nelson Collicutt became his stepfather in 1959.

Alvin is survived by his beloved wife, Louise Voghell Hillhouse; and his children, Shawn (Yuko) and Tammy (Ward); his sister, Elizabeth Ponting (Robert); and his four grandchildren, Noah, Austin, Jonah and Sofia. He was reunited in death with his youngest son, Chad Hillhouse (1976-2010)

Alvin's career began as a teacher before he joined IBM, where he dedicated 35 years of service until his retirement. His time at IBM took him around the globe, allowing him to immerse in diverse cultures and connect with people from all walks-of-life. Alvin had a deep passion for learning and understanding others, and he cherished sharing his life experiences. A humble man of faith, Alvin honored God by surrounding us all with unconditional love, deep gratitude, and an unforgettable sense of humor.

A private graveside burial will take place in Cowansville, Quebec, at a later date, honoring Alvin's final wishes.
